You want to be an effective presenter. You want to have an audience that listens to your presentation and actually gets something out of it. That’s not always as easy as you might hope, but you can become a better presenter when you prepare and follow the key steps to a quality presentation. Follow the proceeding steps, and you will find that it’s going to be a bit easier to become a truly effective presenter.
Step #1 – Know the Subject
You need to make sure that you have all of the knowledge you need about your subject, and that you research to anticipate for any questions that people might have after your presentation. Know everything about the subject, whether you are giving a presentation on your company’s financials, a new product, or even a talk about history. Know as much as possible. Research the subject until you are an expert on the matter. This is especially important if you are selling anything.
Step #2 – Know the Audience
Just as you need to know your subject, you need to know your audience as well. Make sure that you tailor your presentation to the people to whom you are presenting. If you are presenting to a roomful of executives, then your presentation and the words that you choose might be different from if you were presenting to a roomful of high school students.
Step #3 – Create a Quality Script and Notes
When you are researching and taking notes, you should be developing the skeleton for your speech and the notes that you are going to use for your PowerPoint presentation slides. Create a speech that has elements of story in it, and make sure that the speech flows from one section to the next naturally.
Step #4 – Use Quality Visual Aids
If you are going to use any visual aids, such as charts, graphs, pictures, or even videos, then you need to make sure that they are high quality and that they are going to be easy for everyone in the audience to read.
Step #5 – Practice
Take some time to practice your presentation a couple of times. Practice more than just reading your speech. You should also practice with the slide presentation so you know the right times to change the slides.
Step #6 – Prepare for the Big Day
Make sure you get a good night’s sleep the night before the presentation, have something to eat in the morning, and double check your notes, script, and your computer to make sure that everything is in order and working properly.
